COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS NETWORK
2008 and 2009 have seen me involved in a personal project of a very different nature. Over the years I have become very aware of the difficulty that commercial and corporate clients have in sourcing photographers in different parts of the UK. The current directories which are available on the internet are run primarily by people with a sales background, who's main purpose is to generate revenue from selling advertising space. As a result, there's no vetting of who's advertising. I therefore came up with the idea of creating a network of photographers from different parts of the UK, who all specialise in advertising, architecture, commercial, corporate, editorial, industrial and PR work. Amazingly, out of the original 20 photographers I approached to form the network, 15 agreed to do so, such was the strength of the idea. After forming a committee and commissioning an agency to design a logo and website, the network is now up and running. THE MULL LITTLE THEATRE
An Tobar, Tobermory, Mull - July & August 2007
The Mull Little Theatre at Dervaig on the Isle of Mull was established by Barry and Marianne Hesketh, two actors who moved to the island in the 1960's. Started initially to entertain the locals and guests of the nearby guesthouse, the theatre quickly became a feature of the island and was famous for being the smallest professional repertory company in the world (the theatre had just over 40 seats).
When the lease expired on the theatre in 2006 and was unavailable for renewal, the company decided to use the opportunity to move to a new purpose built centre just outside Tobermory. This exhibition grew from a project to record and capture the spirit of the Little Theatre before it is converted or demolished for use as a holiday home.
DECISIVE MOMENTS IN THEATRE
RSAMD-Jan to March '06 Glasgow Film Theatre-May '05
Richard Campbell has been photographing theatre for over 10 years and has worked with many of Scotland's leading theatre companies. This exhibition showcased some of his most memorable images.
The title is borrowed from Cartier-Bresson who defined the nature of the 'decisive moment' in photojournalism. When photographing a performance there are an infinite number of potential moments to capture. The challenge for a photographer is to find that split second of time when the performance and the lens combine to create a defining image.
CITIZENS@WORK
Citizens' Theatre Sept 2004 to Sept 2005
In 2003, Richard embarked on a project to celebrate the Citizens Theatre's Diamond Jubilee, by taking portraits of all the key people who work in the building. It was also his aim to capture the Citz during the final year of Giles Havergal, Robert David MacDonald and Philip Prowse, who had been at the helm of the internationally renowned theatre for over 30 years.
This series of portraits was subsequently purchased by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
