We were recently approached by a flooring company who were looking for commercial product photographers in Edinburgh to take some case study photographs of recently installed flooring.
As commercial photographers in Edinburgh, we have a lot of experience in photographing products in situ. Unlike other types of product photography in the studio, where you have complete control over the lighting and environment, commercial photography on location demands a different set of skills and equipment.

Although it’s important to show the flooring in context it’s still important to highlight the flooring. A fairly low angle is therefore crucial.
The biggest challenge with this type of interior case study photography, is the fact that the products have already been installed in a working office. One solution might be to photograph out of hours but this is often impractical as it would involve having to open up especially early or late and pay for staff to do that. Unless you are photographing in mid summer, this would also mean that it would be dark outside with no natural light coming in.
In order to be able to shoot on location effectively, we have a range of portable studio lighting which is easy to move around and hide out of shot. It is also battery operated which means there are no trailing cables; essential from a health and safety perspective. All the lights are triggered remotely, so it’s also possible to have multiple lights, some often at great distance.

This was one of the busiest parts of the office. It required some polite requests to get the area clear plus some quick tidying of chairs and desks.
Other essential pieces of equipment we carry are tilt and shift lenses to ensure the flooring and interiors don’t have any nasty converging verticals.
The final piece of ‘equipment’ is good old politeness and courtesy. The important thing you must remember, is that although you are doing commercial photography for the client, the office where the flooring products have been installed is owned by someone else and they are providing their time for free to enable the photography to happen. Fortunately, the shoot had been arranged on a day when the office was fairly quiet but there was the odd time when we had to politely ask people if would give us just a few moments to get a shot clear of people.
