As an Edinburgh product photographer, the lockdown due to Coronavirus has presented a few challenges but despite that it is actually one of the few types of photography that can continue as you can safely work in isolation. If the client posts the products then there is even less interaction.
Social distancing restrictions do provide some limitations though. Usually, before I start product photography I have a meeting with the client beforehand to discuss what’s required but this is something than can easily be done over the phone or by email. As a product photographer in Edinburgh, probably one of the more restrictive things is not having the client at the start of the shoot to agree on things like angles.
Very often this is left for myself to decide but for certain types of products the client has a particular idea of what they want. This can be overcome by emailing a few test shots prior to the shoot, or as we are now offering a live Zoom conference call, with a screen share so clients can comment on the shots as they are being taken.

I wanted this shot to be very natural so I just used a single speed light on a soft box with a reflector.
An Edinburgh based company approached us to photograph their range of lighting and homeware products. All the initial discussions took place over the phone and by email and they also posted us products directly from their warehouse but one particular problem was that they also wanted lifestyle product photography to show what their products would look like in use.
Given the current restrictions, finding a location wasn’t an option, so I decided to photograph these using my own house as a location. I wasn’t sure how it would work at first as our house is Victorian with many features which aren’t commonly found in typical modern houses but fortunately the back of the house has been modernised and has a modern kitchen, bathroom and bedroom which provided a suitable setting for the lifestyle photography.

I created a very simple set up for this lifestyle shot so clients could see the size of the light as well as the effect of the light.
I wanted the lifestyle shots to appear natural and not too staged, so I used the minimum of lighting, mainly costing of a speed light with a soft box and a reflector. For the shot in the bathroom I was just able to use natural light.

I was able to use natural light for this shot as there was enough coming in through the window. The white walls of the bathroom and the bath also acted as a reflector.

It was important to show the glow from this salt crystal night light.
