As architectural photographers in Edinburgh, we are asked to photograph a wide range of buildings from hotels, offices, commercial premises and housing developments to industrial buildings.
This particular shoot was for a company who needed photography of their new commercial and industrial units near Edinburgh in order to showcase them to potential clients.

It was important to highlight the parking facilities at the site.
There are two things which are crucial for architectural photography; the light and the right equipment. When we were commissioned, the first thing we did was check which way the main elevations were facing so we’d know when they would catch the sun.
This was particularly important, as this shoot was actually done in February when the sun was still very low in the sky and daylight hours were limited. Once we knew that, the next thing to do was wait for the right weather, which isn’t always easy in the Scottish winter. Thankfully, our patience paid off when the right weather did arrive.

Other features such as security were important.
The second most important thing is to have the right equipment. As architectural photographerss, we use a specialist shift lens to photograph the main elevations which keeps the verticals straight. Without this, the buildings would appear to be leaning. This can be corrected in Photoshop but it does result in distorting the image and losing some quality, so it’s always better to do it in camera.
You can see a video of me on our Facebook page showing the lens in use.

The client also wanted shots to show the electric car charging points outside the units.
