When building services company PREAH were looking for commercial photographers in Edinburgh, they approached us as we have a lot of experience doing case study photography in industrial environments.
The brief was to take a range of shots which would show their staff at work in various locations in Edinburgh carrying out their core services, which are the installation of heating, air conditioning and electrical systems and building maintenance.
The area around these air conditioning units was very unattractive, costing of a bin area and concrete walls. We framed the shot to exclude most of this so the unit and worker became the main point of focus.
As commercial and industrial photographers in Edinburgh this always presents two main challenges. This first is simply working in these types of environment which are often cramped and dirty.
Added to that is the fact that you are having to photograph staff who are carrying out work and their time to pose for photographs is very limited. This means having to work very quickly with a minimum of equipment and set up, something which comes from years of experience.
By concentrating on the engineer and the pipework we were able to exclude the floor which was covered in tools and building debris.
The other main challenge is purely a photographic one; how to get good shots which hold your interest visually but also tell the story and communicate what the client does. Doing this in a cluttered environment isn’t easy but from years of experience we have developed a way of working which allows us to focus on what is important in the image and trying to eliminate or minimise the things which aren’t necessary.
As a photographer you are always learning new things. We never knew that cisterns and systems in public toilets were accessed by removing wall panels!
