When Edinburgh based company X-Trade brought out a range of joinery and builders’ products, they were looking for commercial product photographers to photograph their products for use on e-commerce sites such as Amazon as well as their own website.
As commercial product photographers, we have a lot of experience in working with similar companies in Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland. The standard for photographing products for companies like Amazon is to shoot them on a white background, at least for the main images. It’s possible to add some lifestyle product photographs as well where you see shots of the products in use.
Even a simple shot like this requires careful lighting to avoid unwanted reflections in the metal.
As we’ve written in previous blogs, photographing products against a white background with a simple lighting set up doesn’t mean you just plonk the products on a shooting table and go click.
Even with a range like X-Trades, there were differences in how different products would reflect the lights, so adjustments had to be made for individual products. We also take a lot of care and attention in positioning the products so they are level, with any lettering on the labels carefully lined up so the products are in the centre of the frame.
Some of the products had to be taken apart to show their function as well as the different parts.
Inevitably, some retouching is also required afterwards to take out any minor dust marks or scratches. One of the boxes was also badly damaged when it was supplied to us so this was tidied up in post production.
It was quite hard to see what this product was inside its casing so we displayed some of the contents.

We had to take shots of the products in their packaging as well as loose.
