Edinburgh based company Orli produce a unique range of massage oil candles, widely used internationally in spas. When they were looking for product photographers to photograph their new range, they approached Blink Imaging because of our experience in product photography.
Two types of photography were required, firstly photographs of the products against a white background for e-commerce and secondly some lifestyle product photographs to be used on the banners for the website.
Some subtle shading was required to show the shape of the candle.
One of the challenges of the product photography against a white background was that most of the candles were in white ceramic pots.
Although they were not pure white, if the lighting was too even there was a great danger of them disappearing into the background. It was also important to show the unique feature of Orli’s massage candles, which is the spout which allows you to pour the melted candle wax/massage oil. The lighting therefore had to be adapted to create some subtle modelling in the candles so you could clearly see all the features.
The unique feature of the candles is the spout which allows you to easily pour the massage oil from the candle.
For the lifestyle product photography, we wanted to create the feel of a spa, so we used some wooden flooring as a background and sourced some orchids. Every shoot is unique and you’re always having to research and find out new things. One thing we discovered is that the type of orchids you can buy from a florist are generally too big and would dwarf the products.
Fortunately, our studio is very close to Marks and Spencer and sure enough they had some miniature orchids in a pot. It was a shame having to cut off the stems but they look great in the photographs.
Shots were taken with the candles unlit and lit.
The final part of the product photography involved some retouching. In the process of lighting the candles some bits of wick and soot had gone into the wax, which although quite natural didn’t look great. We therefore tidied this up as well as well as smoothing over the glaze on the some of the candles which was a little uneven due to them being samples.
